Early Morning Heartbreak

Almost every day I get up before the sun and take a cup of coffee to the front porch. I sit and listen to the birds and watch the bats in their last frantic effort to feed before sunrise. But my real reason for sitting out front instead of in back is that I can watch our foxes romping on the wide expanse of grass across the road. That was not the case this morning. Instead of enjoying the beginning of the day it was early morning heartbreak for me.

  1. Awe, so sorry you found them like that. I understand the circle of life and if it had been a coyote I would not like it but understand it but when humans are involved it saddens me so much.

  2. This saddens me so much. I’m so sorry that you were faced with such heartbreak this morning. Speed limits are there for a reason, it’s annoying to think that this was caused by an inconsiderate human being who was so caught up in his/her need to speed down the road.

    1. I can’t believe how much I sobbed over those foxes. But they’ve become a wild part of the family over the years. And now I’m worried about Spooky (the one who wasn’t on the road). He’s so shy I’m afraid he’ll stay in the den with Victoria and Caution gone.

    1. Thank you. After having them living in our woods for so many years it was really tough to see that this morning. I don’t think I’ll be having coffee on the front porch for a long time.

      1. I didn’t know what to say. I mean there’s nothing that I could say that would make it better. I love our foxes, rabbits, birds, etc. When one goes missing or is found, it’s heartbreaking. They are like our little families.

      1. I know. My daughter dog Pierre was bitten by coyote in our back yard. We didn’t how to tell her. But we thought we should tell her before she went to school. She took a look and cried. I don’t know how she handled school that day!! It’s sad of what happened to you foxes! You’re grief your loss for awhile!

    1. I haven’t been out of bed much lately. The pain has been giving me hell. But tonight Pete came and picked us up and we went to the fireworks in the village. Andi & the kids met us there.
It took forever to get home since there is only one road that goes all the way through. And when we pulled in, Pete said, “Mom! Look by the mulberry tree!” And there was Spooky! And she seems braver since she’s alone. She didn’t run from the headlights. She stood her ground until we got out of the car and even then she just went into the tall grass at the edge of the field. I could still see her eyes shining as she watched us! I’m beyond delighted!
Our next door neighbor (now I guess technically an in-law) saw Spooky a few days after the accident and said she looked really ragged. Rose said she looked like she hadn’t been grooming herself at all. But tonight she was clean and her fur was all down the right way. We’re hoping she meets one of the nice boy foxes who lives in the back field and raises her own litter in the woods where she was born.

      1. Aww, I’m sorry! I’ll be praying for you! ❤

Oh, that’s nice that you got to see some fireworks! 🎇

Yay, I’m glad that Spooky is okay, and even came to say hello! 😀 I guess when she looked ragged, she was still mourning the loss. I hope she finds a boy fox and has a litter as well! 🙂

      2. I’m sure you’re right that she was grieving. And she had to have seen the other two get hit. They were always together. Poor thing must have been traumatized. If I were a boy fox I’d fall in love with her!
